Sole trader accounts

Sole Trader Accountant

Your sole trader accounts, handled.

Most sole traders file their own self assessment — until a deadline creeps up, an allowance gets missed, or HMRC sends something unexpected. We handle the accounts, the return, and the tax planning for a fixed £150 annual fee. Qualified accountants, plain-English explanations, and replies the same day you ask.

  • Self assessment filed accurately and on time every year
  • Allowances and expenses claimed correctly — nothing left on the table
  • Your tax bill known well before HMRC sends the reminder
  • Fixed £150 fee — no surprises, no hourly rates

No long-term contract required. If it is not working after three months, you leave with clean records and nothing owed.

Sound familiar?

Still doing your own self assessment every January?

Most sole traders start out filing their own returns. It works — until it doesn’t. Income from multiple sources, expenses you’re not sure you can claim, payment-on-account calculations that never seem to add up. The return gets done, eventually, but rarely with much confidence that everything is correct or that you’ve paid only what you actually owe.

  • Filing your self assessment at the last minute and hoping for the best
  • Not certain which expenses are allowable or how much to claim
  • No clear picture of your tax bill until HMRC confirms it

What sorted looks like

Your return is prepared by a qualified accountant, allowances are applied correctly, and you know your tax position well before the January deadline. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

  • Your self assessment filed accurately — well ahead of the deadline
  • Every allowable expense identified and correctly claimed for you
  • Tax bill calculated and communicated clearly, months in advance
  • Fixed £150 fee — the same price whether your year is simple or involves multiple income streams

Why Wings Online Filings

Why sole traders choose us over doing it themselves

There are plenty of accountants. These are the things that actually matter when you’re self-employed and want a reliable service without the overhead.

💷

Fixed £150 — and we’ll match any lower quote

The self assessment fee is £150, one-off, with no hidden extras. Wings is the best priced online accountancy practice in the UK, and we stand behind that with a price match promise: show us a quote from a business with a lower price and we will match it. The price you see is the price you pay.

📋

Plain English, not accounting jargon

The return gets filed — but you also get a clear explanation of what your tax bill is, why, and what to expect next. Most sole traders we speak to have never had someone explain their numbers in terms they actually understand. That changes from the first conversation.

☁️

Fully online — no office visits required

Everything is handled remotely across the UK, using Xero, FreeAgent, QuickBooks, or Sage depending on what works for your setup. Documents are shared securely online, and questions get answered the same day you ask them. No travel, no waiting rooms, no unnecessary complexity.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most sole traders are set up and have their first return underway within a week of getting in touch. There is very little you need to do beyond answering a few questions.

1

Get a free quote

Fill in the short form or call us on 020 8089 1876. We will confirm what is needed and give you a fixed price before anything starts. No obligation and no sales pressure.

2

Share your records

Send us your income and expense information — bank statements, invoices, or access to your cloud accounting software. If your records are incomplete or behind, we handle the catch-up. You do not need to arrive with everything perfectly organised.

3

We prepare and file

Your self assessment is prepared by a qualified accountant. We identify every applicable allowance, calculate your liability, and share a clear summary with you before submission. Nothing is filed without your approval.

4

Know where you stand

Your return is with HMRC, your tax bill is confirmed, and you know exactly what is due and when. Less of your January spent worrying about a deadline. That is, on reflection, a reasonable outcome for £150.

Questions

A few things sole traders usually ask

I only have self-employment income — is it still worth using an accountant?+

For a fixed £150, your return is prepared by a qualified accountant who knows which expenses are allowable for self-employed individuals, identifies reliefs you may not have been claiming, and calculates your payments on account correctly. For most sole traders, the tax saving alone covers the fee — and the time saved is a reasonable bonus.

What exactly does the £150 self assessment fee include?+

It covers preparation of your SA100 and SA302, income from multiple sources, identification and application of applicable allowances and reliefs, payments-on-account advice, and timely submission to HMRC. There are no additional charges for straightforward sole trader returns. If your situation is more complex — for example, rental income, capital gains, or overseas income — we will tell you upfront before anything starts.

My records for the year are in a bit of a state — is that a problem?+

It is more common than you might think. We work with the records you have, and if there are gaps we will tell you clearly what we need and how to get it. If significant catch-up work is required, we will quote separately for that before starting. Arriving with imperfect records is not a reason to delay getting sorted.

Am I tied into a contract if I use Wings for my accounts?+

No. The self assessment service is a one-off annual fee each tax year — there is no ongoing contract and no monthly commitment unless you choose to add bookkeeping or VAT services. If you want ongoing support, we can discuss what that looks like and price it accordingly. You are never locked in.

I have income from both self-employment and employment — can you handle both on the same return?+

Yes. A self assessment return can include employment income, self-employment income, rental income, dividends, and other sources within a single filing. We will confirm what applies to your situation during the initial conversation and make sure everything is reported correctly and efficiently.

How do I know if I’m approaching the VAT registration threshold?+

If you use our bookkeeping service, your taxable turnover is tracked throughout the year and we flag the threshold before you cross it — not after. If you are doing your own bookkeeping, it is worth reviewing your rolling 12-month turnover regularly. VAT registration carries a fixed date obligation, and the penalty for late registration is based on the VAT that should have been paid from the threshold date — so early visibility matters.
