Sound familiar?
Not entirely sure how to register — or whether you already should have?
The HMRC self-employment registration process is not complicated once you know what you are doing. The problem is that most first-time sole traders do not know what they are doing, and the guidance on GOV.UK assumes you already do. Miss the deadline and there is a penalty. Register for the wrong thing and you create more admin to undo it. Most people put it off longer than they should.
- Unsure of the registration deadline and whether a penalty already applies
- Confused about what HMRC actually needs — UTR, NI class, Self Assessment enrolment
- Already trading but never formally registered, with no clear idea of the risk
What registered and sorted looks like
We take care of the HMRC notification, UTR application, and Self Assessment enrolment from end to end. You get confirmation of each step as it happens, and a plain-English summary of what you owe and when.
- Registration completed on time — no penalty exposure from day one
- UTR number, NI class, and Self Assessment enrolment handled and confirmed
- Any historic trading period reviewed so nothing is left outstanding
- Fixed, transparent fee — no surprises once the work is done
What new sole traders say after working with us
These are the people who came in not entirely sure what they needed — and left with everything in order and a clear picture of what comes next.
Working with Prad is an absolute lifesaver as someone just starting out in the business world. Being new to everything, it can feel incredibly overwhelming, but Prad makes the whole process straightforward and stress-free. His knowledge of UK accounting and HM Revenue & Customs is second to none, and he always takes the time to explain things clearly rather than leaving me confused. Having someone I can fully trust to handle my filings means I can focus on actually growing my business rather than drowning in paperwork. If you’re a new business owner looking for a reliable, knowledgeable accountant, I couldn’t recommend Prad highly enough!
Absolutely brilliant service. Prads is so efficient and knowledgeable. For the first time I feel well supported and informed over my self assessment returns and tax advice in general. Thank you!
Everything the registration covers
One fixed fee covers the full process — from the initial HMRC notification through to confirmation of your UTR number and Self Assessment enrolment.
HMRC Registration and UTR Application
We notify HMRC that you are self-employed and apply for your Unique Taxpayer Reference number on your behalf. Most UTR numbers arrive within 10 working days of registration. You will know the status at each stage.
Included as standardNational Insurance and Self Assessment Enrolment
Once registered, you will be liable for Class 2 and Class 4 National Insurance contributions depending on your profit level. We explain what you owe, when you owe it, and make sure your Self Assessment account is set up correctly before your first deadline.
Included as standardPlain-English Compliance Summary
You receive a written summary covering your registration confirmation, your key filing deadlines, and what to keep records of going forward. No jargon — just what you actually need to know to stay compliant in your first year.
Included as standardConsistently the same experience, whoever you are
From first-time founders to established sole traders catching up on years of missed filings — the feedback tends to say the same things: clear, fast, and considerably less painful than expected.
Very Fast and Communicative on Personal Filing
“Prads was very fast and communicative with my personal annual filing.”
Helpful Accounting Advice for a Small Business
“I own a small passion business and prads has been very helpful in giving accounting advice and helping me to understand business from an accounting perspective. Super attentive, efficient and I will definitely recommend!”
Patient, Knowledgeable, and Easy to Work With

What makes this different from doing it yourself
Anyone can fill in an online form. What you are paying for is the certainty that it has been done correctly, that nothing has been missed, and that you know what comes next.
Registered Correctly the First Time
A surprising number of self-employment registrations are submitted with missing details, incorrect start dates, or the wrong business classification — all of which create follow-up correspondence from HMRC. We check everything before it is submitted. If something needs clarifying, we ask before filing, not after.
Fixed Fee, No Hidden Extras
Wings Online Filings is the best priced online accountancy practice in the UK — and we stand behind it. Show us a quote from a business with a lower price and we will match it. The fee for self-employment registration covers the full process, not just the submission.
Qualified Accountants, Properly Regulated
The firm is run by a qualified ACA-chartered accountant with over seven years of experience, and Wings Online Filings is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider registered with Companies House. That matters when HMRC correspondence arrives — and occasionally, it does.
Up and running in four straightforward steps
The registration process is handled entirely online. You will not need to print, post, or visit anyone in person.
Tell us your situation
Fill in the short quote form above or call us on 020 8089 1876. We will ask a few straightforward questions — when you started trading, what type of work you do, and whether you have any existing HMRC references. That is typically enough to get started.
We confirm what is needed
Once we have the basics, we will confirm exactly what the registration involves for your circumstances — including whether any historic income needs to be declared — and give you a fixed fee. No surprises and nothing open-ended.
We handle the HMRC submission
We notify HMRC, apply for your UTR number, and enrol your Self Assessment account. You will receive updates at each stage so you are not left wondering where things are.
You are registered and ready to trade
Once confirmed, you receive a written summary covering your registration, your key deadlines, and what records to keep. From here you can trade with confidence, knowing your compliance is in order. Which is, frankly, the way it should be from day one.
“Professional, efficient, confidence that everything is taken care of.”
Things people usually ask before getting started
When do I actually need to register as self-employed with HMRC?
You must register by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started self-employment. So if you began trading in the 2024/25 tax year, the registration deadline is 5 October 2025. Miss it and HMRC can issue a penalty, though the practical consequence often depends on whether tax was owed. If you are already past that point, we will assess where things stand before registering — it is usually straightforward to resolve.
What does the self-employment registration service cost, and what does it include?
The fee is fixed and confirmed upfront before any work begins. It covers the full process: HMRC notification, UTR number application, Self Assessment enrolment, and a written summary of your obligations. There is no additional charge for follow-up questions related to the registration. Wings Online Filings is the best priced online accountancy practice in the UK — show us a lower quote and we will match it.
I have been trading for a while without registering. Is it too late, and will there be a penalty?
It is not too late. Registering late is common, and HMRC’s approach depends largely on whether tax was owed during the unregistered period. We will review your trading history as part of the process, advise on any potential exposure, and register you correctly going forward. The sooner it is done, the simpler it is to manage.
Do I have to commit to an ongoing service, or is this a one-off?
The registration is a one-off fixed fee with no ongoing commitment attached. Once you are registered, you are under no obligation to use Wings for anything else — though many clients do return for their Self Assessment tax return when the time comes. There is no contract to sign and nothing that auto-renews.
Do I need to register for VAT at the same time as registering as self-employed?
Not necessarily. VAT registration is a separate process and is only mandatory once your taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold (currently £90,000). If you are close to or over that figure, we can handle both registrations together. If you are well below the threshold, VAT registration is optional and we can advise on whether voluntary registration makes sense for your situation.
What taxes will I actually need to pay once I am registered as self-employed?
As a self-employed individual you will pay Income Tax on your profits above the personal allowance, plus Class 4 National Insurance (9% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, 2% above that) and Class 2 NI, which is a small flat-rate weekly contribution. Your first Self Assessment return — due by 31 January following the end of the tax year — is where you declare income, claim allowable expenses, and calculate what you owe. We can walk through what to expect based on your estimated earnings before you are committed to anything.
