Sound familiar?

Still not sure what your tax bill is going to be?

Most sole traders in London know they need to submit a self assessment every year. Fewer know exactly what they owe, what they can claim, or whether their records are in good enough shape to submit without guessing. The January deadline has a way of arriving earlier than expected, and the fine for missing it starts immediately.

  • Self assessment left until January, records in no particular order
  • Unsure which expenses and allowances you are actually entitled to claim
  • No idea what your tax bill will be until HMRC tells you

What sorted looks like

Your self assessment is prepared from your records, checked for allowances you might have missed, and filed on time — with a clear explanation of what you owe and why. No surprises. No scramble.

  • Your records organised and your return filed well before the deadline
  • All applicable allowances and reliefs claimed and explained plainly
  • Your tax position visible months ahead, not the week HMRC writes
  • Fixed £150 fee — no hidden costs, no hourly rates to worry about

Working with Prad is an absolute lifesaver as someone just starting out in the business world. What you get

Everything a sole trader needs, covered

From your annual self assessment to ongoing bookkeeping and VAT, here is what Wings handles for sole traders — at fixed, published prices.

01

Self Assessment Tax Return

Your SA100 and SA302 are prepared from your records, checked for allowances across all income sources, and submitted to HMRC on time for a fixed fee of £150. You will know your tax liability and payment-on-account position before filing — no guessing, no last-minute surprises. This is the most common sole trader filing and the one most likely to be done late or done wrong without qualified support.

Fixed fee — £150
02

Bookkeeping and Cloud Accounting

Monthly bookkeeping keeps your income and expenses current, so your self assessment is never a scramble at year-end. Wings works with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, and Sage — whichever you are already using, or we will set you up on one. Clean books mean your numbers are useful all year, not just on 31 January.

03

VAT Returns and MTD Support

If your turnover is approaching or above the VAT threshold, your VAT obligations need to be handled correctly from the start — wrong scheme choices or missed registrations are costly to fix. Wings manages quarterly or monthly VAT returns, advises on the right scheme for your business, and keeps you Making Tax Digital compliant. You will not cross the threshold without knowing it.

Why Wings

Why sole traders switch to Wings

There is no shortage of accountants in London. Here is what makes Wings the choice for sole traders who want qualified work at a fair price.

💷

The lowest price, guaranteed

Wings is the best priced online accountancy practice in the UK — self assessment from £150, with no hidden charges added at the end. That is not a marketing line: show us a quote from a practice with a lower price and we will match it. Fixed fees are published upfront so you know exactly what you are paying before you start.

📋

Plain English on every filing

Most accountants file your return and send you a number. Wings explains what the number means, what drove it, and what you can do differently next year. Qualified accountants who communicate in plain terms, not jargon — so you leave each conversation knowing more than when you started.

🛡️

Qualified, regulated, and accountable

Wings Online Filings is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider registered with Companies House, AML supervised by HMRC, and holds professional indemnity insurance. The firm has supported hundreds of UK businesses from early-stage founders to established companies, including some featured in The Times and Entrepreneur.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Starting with a new accountant feels like a bigger task than it usually is. Here is exactly what happens from your first message to your first filing done.

1

Request a free quote

Fill in the short form on this page and tell us what you need — self assessment, bookkeeping, VAT, or a combination. You will receive a fixed quote the same day, with nothing to pay until you decide to proceed.

2

We review what you have

Send over your records in whatever state they are in — spreadsheet, bank statements, or a cloud accounting export. Wings will assess what needs doing and confirm the scope before any work begins. There are no surprises about cost or effort.

3

We prepare and file

Your return or accounts are prepared, checked for allowances, and submitted to HMRC on your behalf. You review and approve before anything goes in. The filing confirmation lands in your inbox — you do not need to do anything else.

4

Know where you stand

Your tax position is clear, your deadlines are in hand, and your books are current. For most sole traders, this is the point where accounting stops being something to dread and becomes something that just gets done. Which is, frankly, the way it should be.

Questions

Things sole traders usually ask us first

I have income from multiple sources — employment, freelance work, and rental income. Can you handle a return like that?+

Yes, and it is more common than most people expect. The SA100 covers employment income, self-employment income, rental income, dividends, and other sources in a single return. Wings prepares returns across all relevant income categories, applies the correct reliefs for each, and makes sure payments on account are calculated correctly so there is no unexpected second bill in July.

What does a self assessment return cost, and what is included?+

A self assessment tax return is a fixed £150 one-off annual fee. That covers preparation of your SA100 and SA302, assistance with income from multiple sources, claiming applicable allowances and reliefs, advice on payments on account, and timely submission to HMRC. There are no additional charges for phone calls or questions during the process. If your needs extend to ongoing bookkeeping or VAT, those are quoted separately based on your volumes.

My records are not in great shape. Is that a problem?+

It is a common starting point, not an obstacle. Wings offers catch-up bookkeeping to bring your records up to date before the return is prepared. The cost depends on how far back and how much volume is involved — you will be told what that is before any work starts, so there are no surprises. Most clients arrive with books in some state of disarray and leave considerably better organised.

Is there a long-term contract or minimum commitment?+

No. For one-off services like self assessment, you pay a fixed fee for the year’s work and there is no ongoing obligation. If you want ongoing support — monthly bookkeeping, for example — Wings works on a rolling monthly arrangement with no lock-in period. You can leave at any time, and your records will be handed over cleanly. There is nothing owed and nothing to sign away.

Do I need to register for VAT as a sole trader in London, and how will I know when I am close to the threshold?+

The VAT registration threshold is currently £90,000 of taxable turnover in a rolling 12-month period. Wings monitors your turnover as part of ongoing bookkeeping, so you will not cross the threshold without knowing it. If you are approaching it, we will advise you on the right scheme — Standard Rate or Flat Rate — before registration becomes mandatory, giving you time to plan rather than react.

Can you advise on reducing my tax bill, or is it just about filing?+

Filing accurately is the minimum — planning is where it gets useful. Wings reviews your allowable expenses, considers timing of income and expenditure, and flags reliefs you may not be claiming. For sole traders thinking about whether to incorporate, there is a material tax difference between operating as a sole trader and a limited company beyond certain income levels, and Wings can model both scenarios before you decide. It is not dramatic, but it is the kind of thing that compounds over several years.
