Sound familiar?
The deadline passed. Now what?
Missing the 31 January deadline triggers an automatic £100 penalty — whether you owe tax or not. Leave it three months and daily £10 charges start. Leave it longer and HMRC adds percentage surcharges on top of whatever is owed. Most people know this is getting worse. They just are not sure where to start.
- HMRC £100 penalty already issued and daily charges accumulating
- Not clear how many years are outstanding or what the total liability is
- Kept putting it off because the paperwork feels too tangled to tackle alone
What getting it sorted looks like
We take the outstanding return off your plate, file it as quickly as your records allow, and tell you exactly what HMRC is owed and when. Where a reasonable excuse exists, we advise on penalty mitigation. No drama.
- Return filed promptly — daily penalty clock stops as soon as it is submitted
- Full liability calculated across all outstanding years, no surprises left
- We work with whatever records you have — even if they are incomplete
- Fixed fee of £150 per return — clear price before any work begins
What clients say after filing late
People usually arrive with returns they have been avoiding for months. Most leave considerably less anxious about HMRC than they arrived.
Absolutely brilliant service. Prads is so efficient and knowledgeable. For the first time I feel well supported and informed over my self assessment returns and tax advice in general. Thank you!
Working with Prad is an absolute lifesaver as someone just starting out in the business world. His knowledge of UK accounting and HM Revenue & Customs is second to none, and he always takes the time to explain things clearly rather than leaving me confused.
What the £150 fixed fee covers
One fixed fee per Self Assessment return — whether it is one year overdue or several. No hidden charges for complexity or chasing HMRC.
SA100 and SA302 Preparation
We prepare your full personal tax return from the records you supply, covering employment income, self-employment, rental income, dividends, and any other sources. The SA302 tax calculation is included — useful if you need proof of income for a mortgage or lender. You will know your tax figure before we submit.
Included as standardHMRC Submission and Penalty Advice
We submit the return to HMRC on your behalf and advise on any penalties already applied. Where a reasonable excuse exists — illness, bereavement, HMRC system failure — we flag the mitigation route and explain what can realistically be reduced. No guarantees are made on penalty outcomes, but the process is handled properly.
Included as standardMultiple Outstanding Years Handled
If more than one year is outstanding, we work through them together and quote per return. Filing the oldest year first is usually the right approach for penalty purposes — we confirm the correct sequence before starting. Getting everything filed in one go is almost always faster than dealing with HMRC correspondence year by year.
Quoted per returnAcross every type of personal tax situation
From first-time filers to those several years behind, the feedback follows a consistent pattern: clear communication, fast delivery, no jargon.
Process Finished End to End in Weeks
“Prads made everything super simple and has just finished the whole process end to end in a matter of weeks. Would highly recommend.”
Patient, Supportive, Met Every Deadline
“Prads was extremely patient and supportive to meet the deadlines and offered specialised advice on company matters. Thank you for your expedient delivery and diligence.”
Explained Everything Clearly, No Confusion
“He explained everything clearly and gave genuine, helpful advice, which made things so much easier for me.”
Why clients choose us for late returns
There is no shortage of accountants. Here is what makes a practical difference when the clock is already running.
Filed While Penalties Are Still Manageable
Speed matters with late returns. The longer a return sits unfiled, the more penalties stack — £100 on day one, £10 per day from month three, then percentage surcharges at six and twelve months. We prioritise late returns and work quickly once we have your records. A return filed this week costs less in penalties than one filed next month.
Fixed Price Before Any Work Starts
The Self Assessment fee is £150 per return — stated upfront, not after a consultation. If multiple years are outstanding, each return is priced at the same fixed rate. You know the cost before committing, which is the way it should be when you already have an unexpected penalty bill to deal with.
Plain Advice on What HMRC Can Waive
We explain honestly what HMRC’s penalty mitigation process involves and whether your circumstances are likely to qualify as a reasonable excuse. We do not promise outcomes we cannot guarantee. What we do is make sure the right information goes to HMRC in the right way — which is more than most people manage when dealing with it alone.
Your late return filed in four steps
The process is designed to require as little from you as possible. Most returns are filed within a few working days of receiving your records.
Send us a quick message
Use the quote form on this page or call 020 8089 1876. Tell us which tax years are outstanding and a rough sense of your income sources. We will confirm the fixed fee and what records we need — usually a ten-minute conversation.
Share your records
Send us whatever you have — payslips, P60s, bank statements, invoices, or a FreeAgent/Xero export. If records are incomplete, we will tell you exactly what is missing rather than leaving you to guess. Catch-up work is quoted separately if needed.
We prepare and check the return
We calculate your tax position, prepare the SA100 and SA302, and send you a draft to review before anything goes to HMRC. You will see the final tax figure, the penalties already applied, and whether a mitigation argument is worth pursuing.
Filed. You can move on.
Once you approve the return, we submit it to HMRC. The penalty clock stops. You get written confirmation and a clear record of what was filed, what is owed, and when payment is due. That particular weight lifts, which is frankly the point of the whole exercise.
“Professional, efficient, confidence that everything is taken care of.”
Things people usually ask about late returns
How long will it take to file my late return once I send you my records?
Most straightforward returns are prepared within two to three working days of receiving the necessary records. If income sources are more involved — multiple employments, rental income, capital gains — allow a little longer. We confirm a realistic timeframe upfront so you know what to expect, and we keep you updated if anything changes.
What does it cost, and are there extra charges if my return is complex?
The fixed fee is £150 per Self Assessment return. That covers preparation of the SA100 and SA302, checking of allowances and reliefs, and submission to HMRC. If your return involves unusual complexity — for example, foreign income, trust distributions, or significant capital gains — we will tell you before starting whether an additional charge applies. There are no surprises after the fact.
My records are a bit of a mess. Can you still help?
Yes — this is a common starting point. Send us what you have and we will identify what is missing and what we can work around. Where records are genuinely incomplete, we will tell you what HMRC is likely to accept as a reasonable estimate and what carries more risk. Catch-up bookkeeping is available separately if records need to be reconstructed before the return can be prepared.
Do I need to commit to an ongoing service to get my late return filed?
No. The Self Assessment service is available as a one-off fixed fee — there is no requirement to sign up for a monthly package or ongoing retainer. Many clients come to us for a late return, get it resolved, and then decide whether to stay on for future years. Either way is fine.
Can HMRC penalties actually be reduced, and how does that work?
HMRC can cancel or reduce late filing penalties if a taxpayer can demonstrate a reasonable excuse — for example, serious illness, a bereavement, or circumstances genuinely outside your control. The process involves writing to HMRC with a clear explanation and supporting evidence. We advise on whether your circumstances are likely to qualify, help you make the case clearly, and manage the correspondence. HMRC’s decision is ultimately theirs, but a well-presented appeal stands a better chance than a poorly drafted one.
I have multiple years outstanding. Does it matter which order we file them in?
It can. Filing the earliest outstanding year first is generally the right approach because it establishes the correct starting position for subsequent years and can affect how penalties are calculated across the sequence. We review the outstanding years before starting and confirm the correct filing order — a step that is easy to overlook but worth getting right.
Stop the penalty clock. Get it filed.
Fixed fee of £150 per return. Send us your records and we will have your late Self Assessment prepared, reviewed, and submitted to HMRC — no ongoing commitment required.
