Sound familiar?
Not sure how to get a UTR number?
HMRC’s registration process is straightforward once you know what to do — but most people going self-employed for the first time do not. The right form, the right timing, the right class of National Insurance: small details that create problems later if they are missed. And once you are late registering, the deadline pressure compounds.
- No idea whether to register online, by post, or by phone
- Unsure which tax class applies or what you are actually signing up for
- Registration left too late, with a Self Assessment deadline already approaching
What a handled registration looks like
We take the registration off your plate entirely. You provide the basics, we submit to HMRC on your behalf, and your UTR number arrives without any of the back-and-forth that catches most people out.
- We identify the right registration route and submit it correctly
- We advise on the right tax class and what your registration actually means
- We register you promptly so deadlines stay manageable
- Fixed fee, no surprises — you know the cost before we start
What new starters say about us
Many of our clients come to us at the beginning — new to self-employment, unsure of the process, and wanting someone who will just explain it clearly.
Working with Prad is an absolute lifesaver as someone just starting out in the business world. Being new to everything, it can feel incredibly overwhelming, but Prad makes the whole process straightforward and stress-free. His knowledge of UK accounting and HM Revenue & Customs is second to none, and he always takes the time to explain things clearly rather than leaving me confused.
For the first time I feel well supported and informed over my self assessment returns and tax advice in general. Thank you!
Everything the registration covers
One fixed fee covers the full registration process — from identifying the right route to confirming your UTR has been issued by HMRC.
HMRC Registration, Done Correctly
We identify whether you need to register as self-employed, as a director, or under another income category, and submit the right forms to HMRC. You do not need to know which route applies — that is part of what you are paying for.
Included as standardNational Insurance Class Advice
Registering with HMRC also means choosing the right National Insurance class, which affects your state pension entitlement and future tax position. We make sure it is set up correctly from the start, not corrected later at additional cost.
Included as standardConfirmation and Next Steps
Once HMRC issues your UTR, we confirm receipt and explain what it means for your filing obligations going forward — including when your first Self Assessment return will be due. You leave the process knowing exactly where you stand.
Included as standardConsistent results across different clients
From sole traders going self-employed for the first time to directors picking up additional income — the same straightforward process, every time.

What makes this registration service different
There are plenty of ways to register for a UTR yourself. Here is why people choose to have us do it instead.
The right route, first time
HMRC has several registration routes depending on your circumstances — self-employment, property income, directorship, or other taxable income. Getting the wrong one causes delays and occasionally additional correspondence you did not need. We assess your situation before submitting anything, so the registration reflects your actual position from the outset.
Fixed fee, no surprises
Wings Online Filings is the best priced online accountancy practice in the UK. The fee for UTR registration is fixed and agreed before we start — no hourly rates, no unexpected additions. Show us a quote from a business with a lower price and we will match it.
Plain English throughout
We explain what your UTR number is for, what it means for your tax obligations, and when your first filing deadline falls — in plain terms, not HMRC language. Most people finish the process considerably clearer on their position than when they started.
Up and running in four steps
The registration process takes minutes on your side. We handle everything that sits between your information and HMRC receiving the correct submission.
Request a quote
Fill in the short form on this page and we will come back to you the same day with a fixed fee. No commitment required at this stage — just a clear number before anything starts.
Share your details
We ask for the basic information HMRC requires: your name, National Insurance number, address, and the nature of your income. It takes around five minutes and everything is handled securely online.
We register with HMRC
We submit the correct registration to HMRC on your behalf and handle any follow-up correspondence if required. You do not need to call HMRC or navigate their online portal.
UTR confirmed, obligations clear
Once HMRC issues your UTR number, we pass it on along with a plain-English explanation of what your Self Assessment obligations look like going forward. You know your deadlines, your filing requirements, and what comes next — which is considerably more than most people know at this stage.
“I had a great experience with Wings Online Filings Ltd. Prads, the owner, was fantastic — very communicative, fast, and professional throughout the whole process. He explained everything clearly and gave genuine, helpful advice, which made things so much easier for me. Everything was done quickly and properly, with no stress at all.”
Common questions about UTR registration
Do I definitely need a UTR number, and how do I know if I should already have one?
You need a UTR if you are self-employed, a company director, a landlord receiving rental income, or anyone with untaxed income outside PAYE. HMRC issues one automatically when you form a limited company, but sole traders and others must register separately. If you are unsure whether you already have one, we can check before submitting anything.
What does the registration service cost, and what is included?
The fee is fixed and confirmed before any work begins. It covers identifying the correct registration route for your circumstances, submitting the registration to HMRC on your behalf, and confirming your UTR along with a plain-English explanation of your filing obligations. No hourly rates, no additions after the fact. Show us a lower quote and we will match it.
I should have registered months ago — is it too late, and will I face a penalty?
HMRC expects you to notify them of a new income source by 5 October following the end of the relevant tax year. Missing that date can result in a late notification penalty, though the amounts are generally modest. We will assess your specific situation, register you promptly, and be straightforward about whether any penalty exposure exists — nothing is made worse by dealing with it now rather than later.
Do I have to commit to an ongoing accountancy service, or can I just use you for the registration?
You can use us for the UTR registration only — there is no obligation to sign up for ongoing accountancy services. Many clients do return when their first Self Assessment return is due, but that is their choice when the time comes. No contract, no lock-in.
How long does it take for HMRC to issue a UTR number after registration?
HMRC typically issues a UTR within 10 working days of registration, though it can take up to 28 days in some cases. The number usually arrives by post to the registered address. We submit promptly once we have your details and will let you know as soon as it arrives — which matters if you have a Self Assessment deadline approaching.
Once I have my UTR, what tax obligations does it create?
Having a UTR means HMRC expects a Self Assessment tax return each year — generally covering income earned from 6 April to 5 April, submitted and paid by 31 January following the tax year end. If your first return is coming up, we offer a fixed-fee Self Assessment service that covers the full return, including tax planning on payments on account.
