Sound familiar?

Not sure what your side hustle actually owes HMRC?

Most people running a side hustle know they probably need to file a self assessment, but are less certain about what counts as income, which expenses they can legitimately claim, and whether they have already crossed the registration threshold. The result is usually a filing done in a rush in January, with a fair amount guessed at. That is when mistakes happen and penalties follow.

  • Not registered with HMRC for self assessment, but probably should be
  • Uncertain which expenses are allowable against your side income
  • No idea what your tax bill will be until the deadline arrives

What sorted looks like

Getting your side hustle tax right is not complicated when someone who does it every day is handling it. Your return is prepared accurately, your allowable expenses are claimed in full, and you know your tax position months before the payment date.

  • HMRC registration confirmed and your self assessment set up correctly from the start
  • All allowable expenses identified and claimed so you pay only what you owe
  • Your tax bill calculated early so there are no surprises in January
  • Self Assessment Tax Return filed for a fixed fee of £150, with no hidden extras

What you get

The services most side hustlers need

Most people with a side income need three things: a correctly filed tax return, a clear record of income and expenses, and advice on what they can reduce their bill by. Here is what we cover.

01

Self Assessment Tax Return

Your SA100 and SA302 prepared and filed for a fixed fee of £150. We work through all sources of income, identify every allowable relief and expense, and submit to HMRC on time. You know your tax position and your payment on account before the deadline, not the night before.

Fixed fee: £150
02

Tax Planning and Allowances

A side income comes with allowances that many people miss: the Trading Allowance, allowable business expenses, and timing of payments. We review your position each year so you are not paying more than the rules require. Advice is included as part of your return, not charged separately.

03

Bookkeeping for Sole Traders

If your side hustle is growing and keeping records is taking longer than the work itself, we can take over the bookkeeping. Using Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent, your income and expenses are recorded cleanly each month. Your tax return at year end becomes straightforward rather than a scramble.

Quote-based, no surprises

Why Wings Online Filings

Why people with side hustles choose us

There is no shortage of accountants. Here is what makes a practical difference when you are managing a side income alongside everything else.

📋

We already know how side incomes work

Whether the income comes from freelance work, a marketplace, a creative project, or driving for a platform, we see this every day. You will not need to spend the first call explaining how your business model works before getting a useful answer. We know which expenses apply, which allowances are available, and where the common errors sit.

🔢

Fixed fee, no invoice surprises

Your self assessment is £150. That covers preparation, all sources of income, allowable expenses, and filing. There is no hourly rate running in the background and no additional charge for asking questions. If your situation is more involved, we tell you the cost before starting.

📞

Questions answered the day you ask

Side hustle questions tend to arrive when something changes: a new income stream, an unexpected payment from a platform, a letter from HMRC. We are available Monday to Friday and reply the same day. You get a clear answer rather than a holding message and a callback in three days.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

Most clients are set up and have a quote within 24 hours. The process is designed so that you do very little and we do the rest.

1

Request a Free Quote

Fill in the short form on this page or call us directly. Tell us roughly what your side income looks like, whether you have filed before, and what tax year you need covered. No paperwork required at this stage.

2

We Review Your Position

We confirm exactly what is needed, agree the fixed fee, and let you know what information to send across. If your records are incomplete or behind, we will tell you what catch-up involves and what it costs before anything is agreed.

3

Send Us Your Records

Bank statements, invoices, platform reports, receipts. Send them across however they exist, whether that is a spreadsheet, a folder of PDFs, or a FreeAgent export. We work with what you have and ask only for what we actually need.

4

Filed, done, and clear

Your return is prepared, reviewed with you, and filed. You will know your tax liability and your payment dates before anything is submitted. After that, your records are tidy and you know exactly where you stand for next year.

Questions

Things people ask before getting started

Do I need to register for self assessment if I have a side hustle?+

If your side income from self-employment or trading exceeds £1,000 in a tax year, you are required to register with HMRC and file a self assessment return. The registration deadline is 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started earning. If you are not sure whether you need to register, we can check your position quickly and confirm the answer.

How much does a self assessment tax return cost?+

The fixed fee for a self assessment tax return is £150. This covers preparation of your SA100 and SA302, income from multiple sources, identifying and claiming allowable expenses and reliefs, advice on payments on account, and filing directly with HMRC. There is no hourly rate and no additional charge for a straightforward return.

My records are a mess. Is that a problem?+

Not unusually so. Most people coming to us for the first time have records in some state of disarray, whether that is a mix of bank statements, platform reports, and receipts in a drawer. We will review what you have, let you know if there are any gaps, and tell you what catch-up work is needed and what it costs before starting anything.

Is there a long-term contract or minimum commitment?+

There is no long-term contract. For a one-off self assessment, you pay the fixed fee and that is it. If you want ongoing support for bookkeeping or future returns, that is a separate arrangement agreed in writing with no lock-in period. You can stop at any point.

Can you help if I earn from multiple platforms or income sources?+

Yes, and this is common. A single self assessment return can cover employment income, self-employed income, platform earnings such as Deliveroo, Etsy, or Airbnb, rental income, and other sources. We pull all of it together and make sure the return is complete and accurate. You will not need to file separately for each stream.

How can I reduce the tax I pay on my side income?+

The main routes are the £1,000 Trading Allowance (which can be claimed instead of actual expenses where it is more beneficial), claiming all legitimate business expenses against your income, and making sure any payments on account from the prior year are correctly credited. We review your position as part of preparing your return so nothing that can be claimed is left out.
