Sound familiar?
The deadline passed. The letters kept coming.
Most people who come to us with a late return did not miss it on purpose. Life got in the way, the paperwork felt overwhelming, or they were not sure whether they needed to file at all. By the time they get in touch, HMRC has usually added a fixed penalty and, in some cases, daily charges on top. The longer it sits, the more there is to untangle.
- One or more years of self assessment unfiled, penalties already building
- HMRC letters arriving and no clear idea what is actually owed
- Records scattered across bank statements, payslips, and invoices with no obvious order
What getting it sorted looks like
We take the return off your hands from start to finish. That means gathering what we need from you, preparing the SA100 correctly, advising on your penalty position, and submitting to HMRC. Once it is filed, you have a confirmed record and the matter is closed.
- Overdue return prepared and filed, penalties stopped from running further
- Your HMRC position explained in plain terms, so you know exactly where you stand
- Records pulled into order from whatever you have, without a full bookkeeping overhaul
- Fixed starting fee of £150, with a clear quote for anything more complex
What clients say about their tax returns

Prads was very fast and communicative with my personal annual filing.
Everything needed to clear a late return
From working out what you actually owe to confirming submission with HMRC, we handle the process end to end so you do not have to coordinate between multiple people or systems.
SA100 Preparation and Filing
We prepare your self assessment tax return (SA100 and SA302 where needed) covering all income sources, applicable allowances, and reliefs. The return is reviewed for accuracy before submission, and you receive confirmation once it is filed with HMRC. We work with income from employment, self-employment, property, investments, and other sources.
Included as standardPenalty Review and Reduction Advice
HMRC applies fixed penalties for late filing, and daily charges can apply beyond three months. We review your exact penalty position, confirm what is owed, and advise on whether a reasonable excuse appeal is worth pursuing. You will not be left guessing at numbers that are not yet final.
Included as standardMultiple Years Filed Together
If you have more than one year outstanding, we can work through them in the right order, which matters for interest calculations and penalty sequencing. We will tell you upfront what each year involves and quote accordingly, so there are no surprises once we get into the detail.

What makes the difference when a return is already late
Filing a late return is not just about speed. It is about knowing which figures matter, how HMRC calculates the penalties, and what to do if the correspondence has already started.
Your penalty position explained clearly
HMRC’s late filing penalty structure has fixed charges, daily rates, and interest that all run independently. We work out exactly what is owed before we start, so you have a clear picture of the liability rather than a rough guess. That means no unexpected bills once the return is filed.
We work with whatever records you have
Most people who come to us with a late return do not have tidy, organised records. Bank statements, payslips, invoices in a folder, or figures exported from FreeAgent or Xero: we are used to working from all of it. You do not need to sort everything before getting in touch.
Qualified accountants, regulated practice
Wings Online Filings is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) registered with Companies House and AML-supervised by HMRC. Our team of qualified accountants handles self assessment returns every day, for sole traders, directors, landlords, and contractors across the UK. The work is done properly and filed correctly.
Your return sorted in four straightforward steps
From first contact to HMRC confirmation, the process is designed to ask as little of you as possible while getting the return filed correctly and on time.
Tell Us What You Have
Fill in the quote form or book a call. Let us know how many tax years are outstanding, roughly what income was involved (employment, self-employment, property, etc.), and what records you have to hand. We will come back to you with a clear quote before anything starts.
We Review Your Position
Once you confirm you want to proceed, we review your penalty position, check which tax years are open with HMRC, and identify what information we still need from you. We will tell you exactly what to send, in plain terms, so there is no back-and-forth about formats or systems.
We Prepare and Check the Return
We prepare your SA100, apply all applicable allowances and reliefs, and send you a draft to review before anything is submitted. You can ask questions at this stage; we will answer them in plain English rather than accounting terms.
Filed, Confirmed, and Behind You
Once you approve the return, we submit it to HMRC and send you the confirmation. Your penalty clock stops, your tax bill is confirmed, and the matter is closed. If you want to stay on top of future returns, we can arrange that too, though there is no obligation to continue.
“Professional, efficient, confidence that everything is taken care of.”
Things people usually ask before getting started
How far back can HMRC go on a late self assessment return?
HMRC can generally assess tax going back four years from the end of the tax year in question, extending to six years where there has been careless behaviour and up to twenty years in cases of deliberate non-compliance. If you have multiple years outstanding, we check which years are still open and advise accordingly. Filing promptly, even when already late, stops the penalty clock and reduces interest. It is almost always better to file than to wait.
What does it cost to file a late self assessment return?
A standard self assessment tax return starts at £150 as a fixed one-off fee. That covers SA100 and SA302 preparation, all income sources, applicable allowances, and HMRC submission. Where a return is more complex (for example, multiple property disposals, foreign income, or several years filed together) we provide a clear quote before starting, so you know the cost upfront. There are no ongoing fees unless you choose to continue with us.
I have not kept proper records. Can you still help?
Yes, and it is more common than you might think. Bank statements are usually sufficient as a starting point for most sole trader and personal returns. Where gaps exist, we will tell you what is needed and what can reasonably be estimated within HMRC’s guidance. We do not require everything to be in perfect order before you get in touch; that is part of what we are here to sort out.
Do I have to commit to an ongoing service?
Not at all. If you only need one late return filed, that is all you pay for. There is no monthly retainer and no long-term contract. Some clients choose to continue with us for future returns once the backlog is cleared, but that is entirely your decision to make once the immediate problem is resolved.
Can you help if HMRC has already opened an enquiry or sent a penalty notice?
Yes. If HMRC has already issued a formal notice to file, a penalty notice, or opened an enquiry, we can still help. The first step is to understand what stage the correspondence is at and which tax years are involved. In some cases, a reasonable excuse claim may reduce penalties already applied, though the outcome depends on the specific circumstances. We will give you an honest view of what is and is not likely to succeed before advising you to proceed with any appeal.
Will filing the late return affect my payments on account for the next year?
Quite possibly, and it is worth understanding before you file. HMRC calculates payments on account (the advance payments due in January and July) based on your previous year’s tax bill. If your income has changed significantly or if multiple years are being filed at once, the payments on account figure can shift considerably. We flag this as part of the return process so you are not caught out by a larger-than-expected payment shortly after the return is submitted.
Stop the penalties running. Get the return filed.
Tell us what you have and we will come back with a clear, fixed quote. No obligation, no long-term commitment, and no jargon to wade through before you decide.
