Sound familiar?
Still not sure what your tax bill will be this year?
Taxi drivers and private hire drivers are self-employed, which means the annual self assessment is entirely on you. Vehicle expenses, fuel receipts, licensing fees, and platform deductions all need to be recorded and claimed correctly. Get it wrong and you either pay more tax than you should, or HMRC comes asking questions. Most drivers we speak to have not claimed everything they are entitled to.
- Vehicle and fuel expenses claimed roughly, not systematically, leaving money on the table
- Self assessment deadline approaching with records still incomplete or in a shoebox
- Uncertain whether to register for VAT, or what the VAT threshold means for your earnings
What sorted looks like
Your expenses are recorded and claimed in full. Your self assessment is filed well before January. You know what you owe before HMRC tells you, which is the way it should be.
- Every allowable expense claimed correctly, including vehicle costs, fuel, insurance, and licensing fees
- Self assessment prepared and filed before the deadline, with no last-minute rush
- VAT position reviewed so you understand where you stand and what your obligations are
- Fixed fee of £150 for your self assessment tax return, with no surprise bills

For taxi drivers, the vehicle is the business. We review your mileage records, fuel costs, insurance, servicing, and licensing fees to make sure every allowable deduction is captured. Getting this right is often the difference between a reasonable tax bill and an unnecessarily large one.

What makes the difference for self-employed drivers
There are plenty of online accountants. These are the specific reasons taxi and private hire drivers come to us and stay.
We already know how you earn
Taxi drivers have a specific set of expenses: mileage or actual vehicle costs, fuel, licensing fees, badge renewals, and app platform deductions. You will not need to explain how your income works before getting a useful answer. We know what is deductible, what is not, and where HMRC tends to look.
Fixed fee, no bill surprises
Self assessment for a sole trader taxi driver costs £150, one-off each year. That covers preparation, checking all your expense claims, filing with HMRC, and advice on your payments on account. The price is the same whether your year is straightforward or involves multiple income sources.
Fully remote, around your shifts
Everything is handled online. You send us your records, we do the rest. There is no requirement to visit an office or take time out of your working day. Questions get answered by email, and we work to the same deadline you are working to.
Up and running in four steps
Most drivers are set up and have a quote within 24 hours. The process is simple because it needs to be.

Fill in the short form on this page. Tell us whether you are a sole trader, your approximate annual income, and whether you have any other income sources. We will come back with a fixed price the same day.
Share Your Records
We will let you know exactly what we need: mileage logs, fuel receipts, licensing documents, and bank statements or platform summary reports. You send them over in whatever format you have, and we handle the rest.
We Prepare and Check Everything
Your self assessment is prepared with all allowable expenses applied and every relief checked. Before we file, you approve the figures. Nothing goes to HMRC without your sign-off.
Filed, Done, and Clear
Your return is submitted, you receive confirmation, and you know exactly what you owe and when. Less time on the admin, considerably less to worry about come January.
“Professional, efficient, confidence that everything is taken care of.”
Things taxi drivers usually ask us
Do you understand vehicle expenses and how taxi driver costs actually work?
Yes. Taxi and private hire drivers can claim either actual vehicle costs (fuel, insurance, servicing, depreciation via capital allowances) or the HMRC approved mileage rate, depending on which method gives a better outcome. We review both options with your specific figures and apply the one that is more advantageous. Licensing fees, badge renewals, phone contracts used for the business, and platform charges are all deductible expenses we account for as a matter of course.
What does it cost, and what is included?
Self assessment for a self-employed taxi driver is a fixed fee of £150 per year. That covers preparation of your SA100 and SA302, all income sources, expense claims, applicable reliefs, advice on payments on account, and submission to HMRC. If you also need bookkeeping, VAT returns, or payroll, those are quoted separately based on your requirements.
My records are in a mess. Is that a problem?
Not unusually so. Most drivers we take on arrive with records spread across receipts, bank statements, and platform reports rather than a tidy spreadsheet. We will tell you what we need, work with what you have, and flag anything that is missing before we start. Catch-up work is quoted separately if multiple years need attention.
Am I tied in to a contract?
No. Self assessment is a one-off annual engagement, so there is no rolling contract. If you want ongoing bookkeeping or VAT support, those are agreed month by month. You are free to leave at any point, with all your records returned to you.
I drive for Uber, Bolt, or another platform. Does that change anything?
Not substantially for the self assessment itself, but it does affect how your income is recorded. Platform settlement reports show gross earnings before their service fees are deducted, and those deductions are themselves allowable expenses. We are familiar with how the major platforms report income and will reconcile your figures correctly so your tax return reflects what you actually received.
Do I need to register for VAT as a taxi driver?
If your taxable turnover goes above the current VAT registration threshold in any rolling 12-month period, registration becomes compulsory. Most self-employed taxi drivers operate below the threshold, but it is worth monitoring, particularly if you have income from other sources. We review your position and let you know where you stand, before it becomes an issue rather than after.
