Sound familiar?
Not sure how to get your UTR number, or where to start?
Most people only realise they need a UTR when a deadline is already approaching. The HMRC registration process is manageable once you know what to do, but working out whether you need to register for Self Assessment, which form applies, and what information to supply can take longer than it should. Getting it wrong, or missing a step, can delay your UTR by weeks and leave you unable to file on time.
- Unsure whether you need to register as self-employed or via another route
- Worried about making an error on the HMRC registration that causes delays
- Your UTR is needed soon and you do not know how long HMRC will take to issue it
What sorted looks like
We assess which registration route applies to you, complete the submission to HMRC, and let you know what to expect next. You do not need to phone HMRC or work through government guidance. We handle it and keep you informed throughout.
- We confirm the correct registration route before anything is submitted to HMRC
- We complete the HMRC registration accurately, reducing the risk of delays or rejections
- We advise on expected timelines and what to prepare while your UTR is on its way
- Clear, fixed-fee quote provided upfront so there are no surprises on cost

What the UTR registration service covers
The service covers the full HMRC registration process, from confirming what applies to you through to submission and follow-up, with no paperwork left on your side.
HMRC Registration, Done Correctly
We review your circumstances and confirm which HMRC registration route is right for you, whether that is Self Assessment for a sole trader, a new director, a landlord, or someone with additional income. The registration is submitted accurately, with all required information included. You are not left to guess which boxes apply.
Included as standardUTR Timeline and Next Steps
Once the registration is submitted, we explain what HMRC will do next and how long to expect before your UTR arrives. We also set out what you will need to do when it does, including whether a Self Assessment tax return will be due. You leave the process knowing what comes next, not just that something has been submitted.
Included as standardOngoing Tax Return Support
Many clients who register for a UTR with us go on to use our Self Assessment service when their first return becomes due. We can prepare and file your tax return once your UTR is active, with fixed-fee pricing and no requirement to stay beyond a single engagement if you prefer. The option is there when you need it.
Available separatelyClients across the UK, sorted and filed
Sole traders, contractors, directors, and landlords have come to us needing compliance set up from scratch. The pattern is consistent: the work gets done, the numbers get explained, and they know where they stand.

What makes this straightforward to get right
A UTR registration is a small task when you know what you are doing. The difference is in whether it is done accurately, promptly, and with the right advice attached.
The Correct Route, First Time
There are several ways to register with HMRC and which one applies depends on your circumstances. Getting this wrong can mean delays or, in some cases, registering under the wrong category. We confirm what applies before anything is submitted, so the registration is right from the start.
Regulated and Properly Qualified
Wings Online Filings is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) registered with Companies House and AML-supervised by HMRC. The team are qualified accountants with professional indemnity insurance. When a firm is involved in your HMRC registration, that oversight matters.
Plain English, Not Just a Submission
Most people who need a UTR also have questions about what comes next: when their first Self Assessment is due, what income to include, and how payments on account work. We answer those questions in straightforward terms, not jargon, so you go into your first tax year with a clear picture of your obligations.
Up and running in four steps
The process is designed to be as straightforward as possible for you. Most of the work sits on our side, not yours.
Get a Quote
Fill in the short form on this page and we will come back to you with a clear, fixed fee for the registration. There is no commitment at this stage, just a straightforward price for the work involved.
We Confirm Your Details
We will ask a few questions about your situation so we can confirm which HMRC registration applies to you. This usually takes a short conversation or a handful of emails. You do not need to have prepared anything in advance.
We Submit to HMRC
Once we have what we need, we complete and submit the HMRC registration on your behalf. We will let you know it has been submitted and give you a realistic timeline for when your UTR should arrive.
Your UTR Arrives, You Are Ready
When your UTR is issued, you are registered with HMRC and compliant from that point forward. We will confirm what you need to keep in mind for your first Self Assessment deadline, so there are no surprises further down the line.
“Professional, efficient, confidence that everything is taken care of.”
What people usually ask before getting started
Who actually needs a UTR number?
Anyone who needs to file a Self Assessment tax return with HMRC requires a UTR. This includes sole traders and freelancers, directors of limited companies, landlords receiving rental income, individuals with savings or investment income above certain thresholds, and employees earning over £100,000. If you are unsure whether your circumstances require one, we can confirm this quickly before any registration is submitted.
What does the service cost and what is included?
Pricing for UTR registration is quote-based and depends on your circumstances. We will give you a clear, fixed fee before any work begins, with no additional charges for the registration itself. The fee covers reviewing your situation, confirming the correct registration route, submitting to HMRC, and advising on what to expect next. There are no hidden extras.
What if I have already tried to register myself and I am not sure it went through?
This is more common than you might expect. We can check what has been submitted, identify whether a valid registration is in place, and resolve any issues before they become a problem. In some cases it is straightforward to confirm; in others, a fresh registration may be needed. Either way, we will tell you exactly where things stand.
Do I have to use Wings for my tax return once I have a UTR?
No. The UTR registration is a one-off service with no obligation to continue. If you would like us to handle your Self Assessment tax return when it falls due, we offer that at a fixed fee of £150 for a standard return. But there is no requirement to stay with us beyond the initial engagement if you prefer to manage the return yourself or use another accountant.
How long does HMRC take to issue a UTR after registration?
HMRC typically issues a UTR within 10 working days of a registration being processed, though this can take slightly longer at busy periods. Your UTR is usually sent to your registered address by post, and a notice to file a Self Assessment return may follow separately. We will give you a realistic timeline when we submit and confirm what to do if nothing arrives within the expected window.
Once I have a UTR, what tax obligations does that create?
Having a UTR means HMRC expects you to file a Self Assessment tax return each year, covering the period from 6 April to 5 April the following year. The deadline for online submission is 31 January after the tax year ends. If this is your first year, we can walk you through what income to include, which expenses you can offset, and when your first payment to HMRC is likely to fall due.
Get your UTR registration handled properly.
We handle the HMRC registration from start to finish, confirm your next obligations in plain English, and give you a fixed fee before any work begins. No surprises, no forms to decipher yourself.
