Sound familiar?
Not sure if you need to register, or when?
VAT registration sounds straightforward until you sit down to do it. The threshold rules, the effective date, the choice of scheme — there are several points where getting it wrong creates a problem that takes time and money to fix. Registering late means penalties. Registering on the wrong scheme means paying more VAT than you should. And registering early without understanding the implications can complicate your invoicing before you are ready.
- Unsure whether you have crossed the VAT threshold or need to register voluntarily
- No idea which VAT scheme suits your business, turnover, or sector
- Worried about choosing the wrong effective date and ending up with a backdated liability
What a properly handled registration looks like
We look at your turnover, business type, and future plans before a single form is filled in. The right scheme is agreed, the correct effective date is established, and the application goes to HMRC with everything in order.
- Your threshold position reviewed so you know exactly where you stand and when to act
- Standard, Flat Rate, or Cash Accounting scheme recommended based on your actual figures
- Effective date agreed correctly so there is no backdated VAT liability to worry about
- Fixed-quote pricing agreed upfront, with no surprises once the work is underway
What business owners say once it is sorted
Our clients come from across the UK, at different stages of business. Here is what two of them said about working with us on compliance that felt complicated before it was not.
Working with Prad is an absolute lifesaver as someone just starting out in the business world. Being new to everything, it can feel incredibly overwhelming, but Prad makes the whole process straightforward and stress-free. His knowledge of UK accounting and HM Revenue & Customs is second to none, and he always takes the time to explain things clearly rather than leaving me confused. Having someone I can fully trust to handle my filings means I can focus on actually growing my business rather than drowning in paperwork. If you’re a new business owner looking for a reliable, knowledgeable accountant, I couldn’t recommend Prad highly enough!
Absolutely brilliant service. Prads is so efficient and knowledgeable. For the first time I feel well supported and informed over my self assessment returns and tax advice in general. Thank you!
Everything included in the VAT registration service
The quote covers the full process from initial assessment to HMRC confirmation. Nothing is handed back to you half-done.
Threshold and Scheme Assessment
Before anything is submitted, we review your current turnover and trading position to confirm whether mandatory registration applies or whether voluntary registration makes commercial sense. We then recommend the most suitable VAT scheme for your business, whether that is Standard Rate, Flat Rate, or Cash Accounting, so the decision is made with your numbers in front of us rather than in the abstract.
Included as standardApplication Preparation and HMRC Submission
We prepare and submit the VAT1 registration application through HMRC’s Government Gateway on your behalf, using the correct effective date and business details. Any queries raised by HMRC during processing are handled by us directly, so you are not chasing correspondence or decoding letters.
Included as standardRegistration Confirmation and Next Steps
Once HMRC issues your VAT registration number, we confirm the details with you and explain what changes on your invoices and records from that point forward. If you need ongoing VAT return support or Making Tax Digital compliance, we can quote for that at the same time.

What makes the difference on something like this
VAT registration is a process most businesses go through once. Getting it right first time matters more than it might appear.
Scheme advice before any form is filed
Choosing the wrong VAT scheme at registration is a common and costly mistake. Before we submit anything, we work through your turnover, sector, and cost structure to confirm which scheme puts you in the best position. That conversation happens as part of the service, not as an optional extra you have to ask for.
Qualified accountants, ACSP-registered
Wings Online Filings is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider registered with Companies House and AML-supervised by HMRC. The work is done by qualified accountants who deal with HMRC applications regularly. You are not dealing with a comparison site or an automated filing tool.
Plain English from start to finish
VAT has its own vocabulary and most of it is unnecessary in a client conversation. We explain what the registration means for your invoices, your records, and your first return in plain terms. You will know what to expect and when, without having to interpret HMRC guidance yourself.
Up and running in four steps
The process is straightforward. Most of the work sits with us, not with you.
Request a Quote
Fill in the short quote form on this page or call us on 020 8089 1876. Tell us a little about your business, your current turnover, and whether you have a particular registration deadline in mind. We will come back to you the same working day with a clear, fixed quote and a brief outline of what happens next.
We Assess Your Position
Once you are happy to proceed, we review your trading figures and advise on the most suitable VAT scheme and effective date. This is the part that prevents problems later, so we take it seriously. If anything looks complicated, we tell you upfront rather than after the application is in.
We Prepare and Submit
We handle the VAT1 application through HMRC’s Government Gateway, using the details you have provided and the scheme we have agreed. Any information HMRC requests during processing is dealt with by us directly. You do not need to monitor correspondence or chase for updates.
You Have Your VAT Number
HMRC typically takes two to four weeks to process a standard registration. Once your VAT number comes through, we confirm it with you and explain exactly what changes from that date: how to update your invoices, when your first return is due, and what records you need to keep. From there, your business is trading on solid ground.
“Professional, efficient, confidence that everything is taken care of.”
A few things people usually ask first
Do I need to register for VAT, or is it optional?
Mandatory registration applies when your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds the current threshold (£90,000 in any rolling 12-month period). If you are below that threshold, voluntary registration is possible and can make sense if your customers are VAT-registered businesses and you have significant VAT costs to reclaim. We look at both scenarios with you before advising which route is appropriate for your situation.
What does VAT registration cost with Wings, and what is included?
VAT registration is priced on a quote basis because the complexity varies depending on your business structure, trading history, and whether any scheme advice is needed. The quote covers the full service: threshold assessment, scheme recommendation, application preparation, HMRC submission, and confirmation of your registration number. There are no add-on charges for HMRC queries that arise during processing. Request a quote and we will confirm the fee the same working day.
My records are not in great shape. Does that matter for the registration?
For the registration itself, the key information is your turnover figures and business details, not a full set of tidy accounts. If your bookkeeping is behind, it can affect how quickly we can confirm your threshold position and effective date, but it does not stop the process. We can also quote separately for any bookkeeping catch-up work if that would be useful alongside the registration.
Is there a long-term contract if I use Wings for this?
No. VAT registration is a one-off piece of work with a fixed quote agreed before we start. You are not entering any rolling contract or subscription by using the service. If you want ongoing VAT return support after registration, that is a separate conversation and a separate quote. Nothing is assumed.
How long does VAT registration take with HMRC?
HMRC typically processes straightforward registrations within two to four weeks of a complete application being submitted. In some cases it can be faster, particularly for businesses that need a registration urgently and can demonstrate a clear liability. We confirm the effective date at submission so you know from which date you need to charge VAT, even while the certificate is still being processed.
Which VAT scheme should I choose, and does it really make a difference?
It can make a meaningful difference to your quarterly VAT bill, particularly if you choose Flat Rate. Under the Flat Rate Scheme, you charge VAT at the standard rate but pay HMRC a lower fixed percentage, which can result in a net benefit depending on your sector and cost structure. The Standard Rate scheme is generally more straightforward for businesses with significant input VAT to reclaim. Cash Accounting can help with timing if your customers pay late. We work through the numbers with you before any scheme is selected.
