Sound familiar?
The deadline passed. The letters arrived. Now what?
Missing a self assessment deadline is not unusual. What makes it worse is leaving it longer than necessary. HMRC’s late filing penalties start at £100 on the day you miss the deadline and continue to build daily after six months. Most people who come to us have simply not got around to it, or are not sure what figures to use, or are worried the return is more complicated than they can handle alone. None of that is a reason not to get it filed.
- HMRC penalties already accruing while the return sits unsubmitted
- Not sure which income figures to include or where to find them
- Multiple tax years outstanding and no idea where to start
What filed and sorted looks like
Once we have your information, we prepare the return, tell you what you owe, and submit it to HMRC. The penalty clock stops. You know where you stand.
- Return submitted promptly so penalties stop accruing as soon as possible
- We work through your income with you and identify every allowance that applies
- Multiple outstanding years handled in order, with HMRC notified correctly
- Clear, fixed fee agreed upfront so there are no surprises on the bill
What clients say about getting it sorted
These are the accounts of real clients who came to us with tax returns that needed handling. Read what they found on the other side.
Absolutely brilliant service. Prads is so efficient and knowledgeable. For the first time I feel well supported and informed over my self assessment returns and tax advice in general. Thank you.
Working with Prad is an absolute lifesaver as someone just starting out in the business world. Being new to everything, it can feel incredibly overwhelming, but Prad makes the whole process straightforward and stress-free. His knowledge of UK accounting and HM Revenue & Customs is second to none, and he always takes the time to explain things clearly rather than leaving me confused.
What the late return service covers
A complete, end-to-end service: we prepare the return, calculate what is owed, claim every relief that applies, and submit directly to HMRC on your behalf.
Self Assessment Return Prepared and Filed
We prepare your SA100 and SA302 using the income figures you supply, whether that is employment, self-employment, rental income, dividends, or a mixture. Every applicable allowance and relief is claimed before we submit. You see the final figures before anything goes to HMRC.
Included as standardPenalty Position Assessed and Explained
Before we start, we work out what HMRC has already charged in late filing and late payment penalties. We explain what is fixed and what can potentially be reduced, so you are not guessing at the total cost. Where grounds for appeal exist, we can advise on that too.
Included as standardMultiple Years Filed in Correct Order
If more than one tax year is outstanding, the order of submission and the way each year feeds into the next matters. We handle all outstanding years in sequence, ensuring HMRC receives them correctly. A single fee is agreed per return, so you know the cost before we start.

What makes this practice different for late filers
Most accountants will file a tax return. Fewer will take the time to explain the penalty position, work out what can be reduced, and make the process feel manageable from the start.
Your penalty position explained clearly
Before we prepare anything, we set out what HMRC has charged, what is accruing, and when that stops. You will not go into the process unsure of what the total bill looks like. Where there is a reasonable prospect of reducing penalties, we will tell you that too.
Multiple outstanding years handled together
We deal with clients who have two, three, or more years of unfiled returns. The order matters: submitting years out of sequence can create problems with HMRC. We handle the sequencing correctly and quote a fee per return before starting, so nothing comes as a surprise.
Qualified accountants, regulated and insured
Wings Online Filings is run by qualified accountants and is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) registered with Companies House. The firm is AML-supervised by HMRC and carries professional indemnity insurance. You are dealing with a regulated practice, not a freelance filer.
Your late return sorted in four steps
You do not need to have everything organised before you contact us. Most clients come to us with incomplete records, and that is fine.
Tell Us What Is Outstanding
Fill in the short quote form or book a call. Let us know which tax years are outstanding and roughly what your income looked like. You do not need precise figures at this stage. We will tell you what we need and give you a clear fee before any work begins.
We Gather What We Need
We send you a simple checklist of the documents required. For most sole traders and employees, that is a P60 or P45, bank statements, and any invoices if self-employed. If records are incomplete, we work with what is available and advise on the best approach.
We Prepare and Review the Return
We prepare the return, calculate the tax liability, apply every allowance and relief that applies, and share the final figures with you before submitting. Nothing goes to HMRC without your sign-off. We also set out the penalty position in plain terms at this stage.
Filed, and Behind You
Once submitted, HMRC confirms receipt and the penalty clock stops. You receive confirmation and a copy of the filed return. If you would like us to handle future years on the same basis, or want to discuss an ongoing service, that conversation is entirely on your terms.
“Professional, efficient, confidence that everything is taken care of.”
Things people usually ask before getting in touch
How late is too late? Can you still file a return from several years ago?
HMRC generally accepts late self assessment returns going back four years, though in some circumstances earlier years can also be filed. The later the submission, the higher the accumulated penalties, but submitting is almost always better than continuing to leave it. We will tell you at the outset which years are still within scope and what the penalty position looks like for each one.
What does it cost, and is the fee fixed or will it change?
A standard self assessment return starts from £150 as a one-off fee. Where a return is more complex (multiple income sources, rental properties, capital gains, or several missing years), we will quote before starting any work, so you know the cost before committing. There are no additional charges unless the scope changes and you agree to them.
My records are incomplete. Can you still help?
Most clients who come to us with late returns do not have everything to hand. We work with what you have and advise on how to reconstruct figures where records are missing. HMRC accepts estimated figures in some circumstances, and we will tell you when that applies and how to document it correctly. Coming to us with incomplete records is entirely normal.
Do I have to commit to an ongoing service, or can you just handle the late return?
There is no obligation to take an ongoing service. We are happy to handle a single return, or all outstanding years, on a one-off basis. If you would like us to manage future returns as well, we can discuss that separately. The decision is entirely yours once the late return is filed.
Can you help reduce or appeal the penalties HMRC has already charged?
Once a return is filed, HMRC’s fixed late filing penalties (the initial £100 and any daily charges) generally stand. However, late payment penalties and surcharges can sometimes be appealed on grounds of a reasonable excuse. We will assess whether that argument applies to your situation and advise honestly, including where an appeal is unlikely to succeed.
Will filing a late return trigger a full HMRC investigation?
Filing a late return does not automatically prompt an enquiry. HMRC opens investigations based on risk criteria, and voluntary disclosure of overdue returns is generally viewed more favourably than returns that only come in after HMRC has written to you. Getting the return filed promptly, with accurate figures, is the best position to be in.
