Part-Time FD Services

Part-Time FD Services

The financial direction your business needs, without a full-time hire.

Many growing businesses reach a point where the numbers matter but a full-time finance director is not yet justified. A part-time FD gives you qualified oversight, clear management reporting, and a forward view of your finances. Fixed-fee or retainer pricing, qualified accountants, and replies the same day you ask.

  • Monthly management accounts reviewed and explained in plain terms
  • Cash flow forecasts so you can see problems before they arrive
  • A qualified financial lead without the full-time salary overhead
  • Strategic input on pricing, investment, and tax planning as you grow

No long-term contract required. If the arrangement is not working after three months, you leave with current, properly structured finances and nothing owed.

Exactly What You Want in a Partner

“Excellent service and genuinely reliable, exactly what you want in an accounting partner.”

Sound familiar?

Growing fast but flying blind on the numbers?

A lot of businesses reach a stage where the basics are covered but nobody is actually looking forward. The accounts get filed, the VAT gets done, but there is no one tracking cash flow week to week, no one flagging the tax bill before it arrives, and no one helping you decide whether that hire or that investment actually makes sense right now. That gap is exactly what a part-time FD is for.

  • No clear picture of cash flow until a problem is already happening
  • Management accounts arrive too late, or not at all, to inform decisions
  • Financial questions pile up with no qualified person to put them to

What having a part-time FD looks like

The right financial oversight does not have to mean a full-time salary and a corner office. A part-time FD arrangement gives you qualified, proactive support at a level and cost that fits where your business is now, with the flexibility to scale as things change.

  • Cash flow monitored and forecasted so you can see ahead, not just react
  • Management accounts produced and reviewed monthly so decisions are based on current data
  • A qualified contact available to answer financial questions as they arise
  • Transparent, agreed pricing with no surprise invoices at the end of the month

What you get

What a part-time FD engagement covers

The scope is agreed based on where your business is and what it needs. Most engagements cover at least the three areas below, with additional support available as required.

01

Management Accounts and Reporting

Monthly or quarterly management accounts prepared and delivered in a format that is actually useful, with commentary explaining what the numbers mean. You will know your gross margin, your overhead run rate, and where the pressure points are before they become problems.

Core to every engagement
02

Cash Flow Forecasting and Planning

A rolling cash flow forecast updated regularly so you can see what your position looks like weeks and months ahead. This is where most small businesses are flying blind, and it is also where the most costly decisions get made without the right information.

Forward-looking financial oversight
03

Strategic and Tax Planning Input

Financial input on the decisions that matter: whether to take on a new contract, when to hire, how to structure a director salary and dividend mix, and how to plan for your tax liability before it crystallises. The kind of conversation a business owner should be having with a qualified accountant regularly, not just at year-end.

Why Wings Online Filings

What makes a part-time FD arrangement work well

The difference between a useful FD relationship and an expensive one usually comes down to three things: how proactive the support is, how clearly the numbers are explained, and whether the cost is predictable.

📊

Proactive, Not Just Reactive

A good part-time FD spots issues before they become urgent, not after the bank statement arrives. Management accounts, cash flow forecasts, and tax planning are all forward-facing. You should know your position now and what it is likely to look like in three months, not just what it was last quarter.

💬

Numbers Explained in Plain Terms

Financial reports are only useful if the person reading them understands what they are looking at. Every management accounts pack comes with clear commentary, and you can ask questions without being made to feel like you should already know the answer. The goal is that you leave every conversation with a clearer picture than you had going in.

🔒

Qualified, Regulated, and Accountable

Wings Online Filings is staffed by qualified accountants and is an Authorised Corporate Service Provider registered with Companies House, AML-supervised by HMRC, and covered by professional indemnity insurance. You are not dealing with a bookkeeper who has broadened their scope: this is qualified financial oversight with the regulatory standing to back it up.

Getting started

Up and running in four straightforward steps

Most clients are properly set up within a couple of weeks. The initial call is free and takes around 30 minutes.

1

Tell Us Where You Are

Book a free call and give us a brief picture of your business: turnover, structure, what you currently have in place, and where the gaps are. There is no preparation required on your part. We ask the questions.

2

Agree the Scope and Pricing

We put together a clear proposal covering exactly what the engagement includes, how often we are in contact, what reporting you receive, and what the monthly cost is. Nothing is open-ended and nothing gets added without your agreement.

3

We Get Access and Get Started

You share access to your accounting software and any existing reports. We take it from there: reviewing what is in place, filling in any gaps, and producing the first management accounts pack. If the books need tidying before we can start properly, we will tell you what is involved and quote for it separately.

4

Your Finances, Under Control

From month two onwards, you receive regular reporting, a forward cash flow view, and a qualified contact to speak to when questions arise. The business keeps moving and the financial side keeps pace with it, without you having to chase anyone for an update.

Questions

Things people usually ask before getting started

How is a part-time FD different from a bookkeeper or a management accountant?+

A bookkeeper records transactions and keeps the ledger current. A management accountant produces reports. A part-time FD does both of those things and then acts on them: flagging issues, advising on decisions, helping with planning, and taking responsibility for the financial direction of the business at a senior level. It is the difference between someone who processes the numbers and someone who tells you what to do about them.

What does a part-time FD engagement cost, and what is included?+

Pricing is based on the scope of the engagement and is agreed in advance, so there are no surprises. A basic engagement covering monthly management accounts and cash flow oversight typically starts at a level that is a fraction of a full-time FD salary. We will give you a clear written proposal before anything is agreed. If you have a like-for-like quote from another firm, we are happy to take a look.

Our books are not in great shape. Can you still help?+

Yes, and it is more common than you might think. Most businesses coming to us for FD support have some degree of catch-up work needed before clean reporting is possible. We will review what is in place, tell you honestly what needs sorting, and quote for the catch-up separately if required. Starting with tidy books makes everything that follows considerably more straightforward.

Is there a long-term contract or a minimum commitment?+

No long-term contract is required. Engagements are typically agreed on a rolling monthly basis with a short notice period on either side. If the arrangement is not working, you are not locked in. What you will have when you leave is properly structured, up-to-date financials, which is more than most businesses start with.

Can you work with our existing accounting software?+

In most cases, yes. The team works with Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, and Sage, and can work within whatever is already in place. If your current software is not suitable for the level of reporting you need, we will tell you and explain the options. We will not recommend a change unless it genuinely makes sense for your business.

Will a part-time FD help with tax planning, or is that a separate conversation?+

Tax planning is part of the FD role, not a separate add-on. That includes director salary and dividend structuring, corporation tax forecasting, capital allowances, and making sure you are not carrying a larger tax liability than necessary into the year-end. The whole point of regular financial oversight is that tax planning happens throughout the year, not in a panic after the accounts are filed.
