Sound familiar?

Not sure when or how to register for PAYE?

PAYE registration is one of those things that seems straightforward until you try to do it yourself. The deadline is before your first payday, but many business owners only find out they needed to register after the fact. Getting it wrong or late creates HMRC complications that take considerably more effort to untangle than simply doing it correctly from the start.

  • Not sure whether you need to register before paying yourself a salary
  • Uncertain which HMRC reference numbers you need and what they are for
  • Worried about missing the registration deadline and triggering a penalty

What registered and correct looks like

We handle the full PAYE registration process with HMRC, confirm your employer reference numbers, and explain what you need to do next. You do not need to work out the forms yourself.

  • PAYE scheme set up correctly before your first pay run, director or otherwise
  • Your employer PAYE reference and Accounts Office reference confirmed and explained
  • Registration submitted on time, with no deadline missed on your side
  • Clear quote upfront, no hidden charges once the work is underway

What you get

What our PAYE registration service covers

A complete registration handled remotely, with clear communication at each stage so you know exactly where things stand.

01

Employer PAYE Scheme Registration

We register your PAYE scheme with HMRC so you have your employer reference numbers in place before your first payroll run. This applies whether you are a limited company director taking a salary, a sole trader taking on staff, or a growing business adding employees for the first time. Registration is submitted online and you will receive confirmation once HMRC has processed it.

Included as standard
02

Reference Numbers Confirmed and Explained

Once registered, HMRC issues two reference numbers: your employer PAYE reference and your Accounts Office reference. We confirm both and explain what each one is used for, so you are not guessing when your payroll software asks for them. You will also be told what your first obligations are once the scheme is live.

Included as standard
03

Ongoing Payroll Support Available

If you need someone to run your payroll each month, process RTI submissions, manage pension auto-enrolment, or handle CIS deductions for subcontractors, we offer an ongoing payroll service quoted to suit your headcount and frequency. Many clients start with registration and stay with us for the payroll itself.

Why clients choose us

What makes this different from doing it yourself

PAYE registration is not complicated when someone who does it regularly handles it. Here is what you get when we do.

📋

Done Before Your First Payday

HMRC requires registration before you pay your first employee or director salary, not after. We know the timeline and submit promptly so you are not retrospectively registering and explaining yourself to HMRC. Getting this right the first time avoids correspondence you do not want.

🔎

Plain English Throughout

PAYE reference numbers, RTI, Accounts Office references, and auto-enrolment staging dates are all terms that appear immediately after registration. We explain each one in plain terms so you are not left Googling acronyms after we finish. You leave knowing what happens next and why it matters.

🤝

A Starting Point, Not a One-Off

Most clients who come to us for PAYE registration end up asking us to handle the ongoing payroll as well, which is entirely optional. We are a UK-wide online practice working with businesses at every stage, qualified accountants, ACSP-registered with Companies House and AML-supervised by HMRC. You are not dealing with a registration agent who disappears once the form is filed.

Getting started

Up and running in four steps

The process is straightforward. Most clients are registered and have their reference numbers within a few working days of getting in touch.

1

Send Us Your Details

Fill in the quote form or call us on 020 8089 1876. We will ask for a small amount of information about your business, your expected first pay date, and how many people you are employing. That is usually enough to get started.

2

We Prepare and Submit

We handle the full HMRC registration on your behalf. You do not need to navigate the Government Gateway or work out which form applies to your circumstances. We will tell you if we need anything else from you before submitting.

3

Reference Numbers Confirmed

Once HMRC processes the registration, we confirm your employer PAYE reference and Accounts Office reference and explain what each one is used for. You will also know what your first filing obligations are and when they fall due.

4

Payroll Ready to Run

With your PAYE scheme active, you are set up correctly and compliant before your first pay date. If you would like us to handle the ongoing payroll each month, we can quote for that separately. Either way, the registration is done properly and on record with HMRC.

Questions

A few things people usually ask us

Do I need to register for PAYE if I am the only director and paying myself a salary?+

Yes, in most cases. If you are a director of a limited company and paying yourself a salary above the Lower Earnings Limit (currently £6,396 per year), you need a PAYE scheme registered with HMRC. This applies even if you are the sole director and only employee. Some directors structure their remuneration to stay below that threshold, but that is a decision worth taking with an accountant before you assume registration is not needed.

What does the PAYE registration service cost?+

PAYE registration is quoted based on your circumstances. We will confirm the fee before starting any work, so there are no surprises. Once registered, if you would like us to handle ongoing payroll, that is also quoted separately based on the number of employees and pay frequency. Get in touch and we will come back to you with a clear figure.

I have already paid someone without registering for PAYE. Can you sort out the mess?+

Yes. Late or retrospective PAYE registration is more common than you might think, and it is manageable when handled correctly. We will assess the situation, register the scheme, and advise on any underpaid PAYE or National Insurance that needs to be reported. Getting it sorted properly now is considerably less painful than waiting until HMRC asks.

Do I have to commit to an ongoing payroll service once registered?+

No. We can handle the registration as a standalone piece of work. There is no obligation to use us for anything further. That said, many clients find it simpler to have the same firm manage the ongoing payroll and RTI submissions once the scheme is live. We are happy either way.

When exactly do I need to register, and what happens if I miss the deadline?+

HMRC requires you to register before your first payday, and you can do so up to four weeks in advance. If you miss the deadline and pay someone without a PAYE scheme in place, HMRC can charge a late registration penalty. The penalty amount depends on how many employees are involved and how long the scheme was overdue. Registering now, even retrospectively, is always better than leaving it.

Once the PAYE scheme is registered, what are my ongoing obligations?+

Each time you run payroll, you need to submit a Full Payment Submission (FPS) to HMRC on or before payday. At the end of the tax year, you issue P60s to all employees and submit final returns. If any employees leave, a P45 must be issued. Pension auto-enrolment duties also apply from your staging date. We can handle all of these as part of an ongoing payroll service if you would prefer not to manage them yourself.
